T2 Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes. It is a condition that happens because of a problem in the way the body regulates and uses sugar as a fuel.

In type 2 diabetes, there are primarily two problems.

  • The pancreas does not produce enough insulin — a hormone that regulates the movement of sugar into the cells.
  • Poor cell response to insulin - Insulin resistance

Almost all of the food we eat contains sugar and is turned into glucose (sugar) to provide our bodies with energy. As a response to this chemical process, our pancreas makes a hormone called insulin to help glucose get into the cells of our bodies. For people who have type 2 diabetes, their bodies cannot use their own insulin well. Thus, sugar builds up in the blood.

Type 2 diabetes is a serious condition that can lead to health issues, such as heart attack, stroke, blindness, kidney failure, or loss of toes, feet, or legs. This condition may begin with prediabetes.

Prediabetes refers to the increase of blood sugar level that is way beyond normal but not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. Without early interventions, this can develop into Type 2 diabetes.
